HemoHIM Side Effects and Safety: What the Evidence Shows

Written by Poblo Peraltas, Independent Atomy distributor

Is HemoHIM safe? What the human safety trial and rat toxicity study found, what is still unknown about side effects, who should avoid it, possible medicine interactions, the 2021 Hong Kong and Taiwan warnings and when to stop.

Short answer: in the small studies done so far, HemoHIM did not cause clinically significant problems. An 8-week trial in 96 healthy adults found no clinically significant adverse events, and a rat toxicity study found no treatment-related toxicity. But how often side effects occur in everyday use is not known, interactions with medicines have not been studied, and in 2021 Hong Kong and Taiwan warned consumers to stop using it. It is not suitable for everyone. This guide explains what is known, what is not, and when to ask a doctor.

What clinical research shows about HemoHIM safety

  • Human safety trial: Seo and colleagues (2025) ran an 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial in 96 healthy adults. They reported no clinically significant adverse events compared with placebo. The trial was supported by the manufacturer, Kolmar BNH, and included only adults aged 30–59.
  • Animal toxicity study: a study in Toxicological Research (2025) found no treatment-related toxicity in rats given up to 2,000 mg/kg per day for 13 weeks, and HemoHIM was not genotoxic in standard tests.
  • Earlier human studies (KAERI 2006 and 2007, and a 2022 fatigue trial in 96 adults) were small and short, and some were run by the developer.

These results are reassuring but limited. The trials were small, lasted about two months, and mostly included healthy adults. They cannot rule out rare reactions, long-term effects or problems in people with illnesses or on medication. Animal results do not automatically apply to people. More detail is in our HemoHIM clinical studies overview.

Possible side effects

There is no reliable data on how often side effects happen when people take HemoHIM in daily life, so any claim that “most users” have none, or that a given effect is “common”, is not backed by evidence. As with many herbal supplements, mild stomach upset is possible in some people, but no rate has been measured for HemoHIM.

Each sachet also contains honey and corn syrup — about 5 g of carbohydrates, including 2.5 g of sugars, according to the US label. If you have diabetes or watch your sugar intake, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it fits your diet. For the full ingredient list, see HemoHIM ingredients.

Possible medicine interactions

Interactions between HemoHIM and medicines have not been studied. That means there is no evidence either way — not that it is safe with every medicine.

  • Blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines such as warfarin or clopidogrel): the Korean label advises people taking anticoagulants to consult a professional before use. Ask your doctor first.
  • Immunosuppressants (for example after an organ transplant or for autoimmune disease): HemoHIM is marketed for immune function, so it is not known whether it could affect these treatments. Do not combine them without your doctor’s approval.
  • Any other prescription medicine: tell your doctor or pharmacist about every supplement you take.

Who should avoid HemoHIM or ask a doctor first

  • Children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women should avoid it; the Korean label cautions these groups, and safety has not been studied in them.
  • People taking blood thinners or immunosuppressants should ask their doctor first.
  • People with an autoimmune disease or liver disease should ask their doctor first.
  • If you have surgery planned, tell your surgeon that you take HemoHIM and follow their advice.
  • Women with irregular menstruation and people with a bleeding disorder should also ask a doctor first; the Korean label cautions them too.
  • If you are allergic to angelica, cnidium, peony or other plants in the carrot family (Apiaceae), do not take it.

The 2021 Hong Kong and Taiwan warnings

On 1–2 November 2021, Hong Kong’s Department of Health urged the public not to buy or use HemoHIM after four cases of liver injury in women aged 42 to 72. Methoxsalen, a prescription drug not declared on the label, was found in samples. Taiwan issued a similar warning in November 2021, and the product was withdrawn in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Whether HemoHIM itself caused the liver cases is debated: a 2023 review by Yang and colleagues disputes causation. As of October 2026, HemoHIM is sold again in Atomy’s Singapore mall and, as HemoHIM G (艾多美 煥力飲G), in Atomy’s Taiwan mall; it is still not sold in Hong Kong. Liver warning signs to know

Because of the 2021 cases, it is worth knowing the warning signs. Stop taking HemoHIM and contact a doctor promptly if you notice:

  • yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • dark urine or pale stools
  • pain or discomfort in the upper right part of the abdomen
  • unusual tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite or itching without a clear cause

When to stop and contact a doctor

  • any sign of an allergic reaction — rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing (seek urgent help if breathing is affected)
  • any of the liver warning signs above
  • unusual bruising or bleeding, especially if you take a blood thinner
  • any stomach or other symptom that does not go away, or that worries you

Follow the label: one sachet twice a day. Do not take more than recommended. See how to take HemoHIM.

Buy genuine product and store it properly

Buy HemoHIM only from Atomy’s official mall. Resale on marketplaces is not authorized, and you cannot be sure where such products come from or how they were stored. Read more about unauthorized HemoHIM sellers. Keep sachets sealed, away from heat and direct sunlight, and do not use sachets that are damaged, leaking or past their expiry date.

Bottom line

In small, short studies, HemoHIM was well tolerated, and a rat study found no toxicity at high doses. But real-world side-effect rates are unknown, medicine interactions have not been studied, and the 2021 Hong Kong and Taiwan warnings remain part of its safety record. If you have a health condition, take medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before trying it. ❓ Does HemoHIM have side effects?

An 8-week trial in 96 healthy adults found no clinically significant adverse events, but how often side effects occur in everyday use is not known. As with many herbal supplements, mild stomach upset is possible. Stop taking it and ask your doctor if any symptom persists or worries you.

❓ Is HemoHIM safe?

Small human trials and a rat toxicity study did not find safety problems, but the evidence is limited, medicine interactions have not been studied, and Hong Kong and Taiwan warned against it in 2021 after methoxsalen was found in samples. Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid it, and people with health conditions or on medicines should ask a doctor first.

❓ Can HemoHIM damage the liver?

In 2021 Hong Kong linked four liver-injury cases to products in which methoxsalen, an undeclared prescription drug, was found. Whether HemoHIM itself caused them is debated. Stop taking it and see a doctor if you notice jaundice, dark urine, pale stools or upper-right abdominal pain.

❓ Can I take HemoHIM with blood thinners?

Interactions have not been studied. The Korean label advises people on anticoagulants to consult a professional, so ask your doctor before combining HemoHIM with any blood thinner.

❓ Can pregnant women take HemoHIM?

No. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid HemoHIM, as it has not been studied in these groups and the Korean label cautions them.
