Is HemoHIM Good for Kidneys? What the Animal Research Shows

Written by Poblo Peraltas, Independent Atomy distributor

Is HemoHIM good for kidneys? There is no human evidence of a kidney benefit. What the animal studies with cisplatin looked at, what a 13-week rat toxicity study found, and why people with kidney disease should ask their doctor first.

Short answer: there is no human evidence that HemoHIM is good for the kidneys. The only kidney findings come from animal studies with the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. HemoHIM has not been tested in people with kidney disease, and it is not a kidney treatment.

Quick answer: is HemoHIM good for the kidneys?

HemoHIM is a liquid supplement made from Angelica gigas, Cnidium officinale and peony root, with honey and corn syrup. In South Korea its approved claims concern immune function and fatigue, not the kidneys. The small human trials measured immune markers, fatigue and tolerability; kidney effects were studied only in animals. The label also lists other ingredients, such as fructo-oligosaccharide, guar gum and small amounts of vitamins; check the label for your country. See HemoHIM clinical studies.

The cisplatin animal studies

Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapy drug that can damage the kidneys, so it is a common model in kidney research. In animal studies, HemoHIM was given with cisplatin and compared with cisplatin alone:

  • Animals given HemoHIM were reported to show less damage to the kidney tubules.
  • Standard kidney blood markers, such as urea nitrogen and creatinine, were reported to be better.
  • The researchers suggested antioxidant effects as a possible reason, since cisplatin causes oxidative damage.

These are animal results under controlled laboratory conditions. Findings like these often do not carry over to people.

The 13-week rat toxicity study

A safety study (Toxicological Research, 2025) found no treatment-related toxicity in rats given up to 2,000 mg/kg per day for 13 weeks, and no genotoxicity. It shows the extract did not harm the animals at those doses — not that it protects kidneys. In people, an 8-week trial in 96 healthy adults found no clinically significant adverse events, but it did not include anyone with kidney disease. The trial was supported by the manufacturer, Kolmar BNH, and included only adults aged 30–59.

What this does not mean

  • It does not show that HemoHIM protects human kidneys or slows kidney disease.
  • It does not show that HemoHIM reduces chemotherapy side effects in patients.
  • It does not replace any prescribed treatment, diet or medicine.

Kidney disease, dialysis or chemotherapy: ask your doctor first

If you have kidney disease, are on dialysis or are receiving chemotherapy, ask your nephrologist or oncologist before taking HemoHIM or any supplement. General points to raise:

  • Supplements: reduced kidney function can change how the body handles herbal compounds, and some supplements interact with medicines.
  • Sugar: each 20 ml sachet contains 5 g of carbohydrates, including 2.5 g of sugars (US label).
  • Potassium: people with kidney disease are often told to limit potassium and some other minerals, so check whether any supplement fits your diet plan.

Children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take it. In 2021 Hong Kong and Taiwan warned against HemoHIM after the undeclared drug methoxsalen was found in samples and liver-injury cases were reported; whether HemoHIM caused them is debated. As of October 2026, HemoHIM is sold again in Atomy’s Singapore mall and, as HemoHIM G (艾多美 煥力飲G), in Atomy’s Taiwan mall; it is still not sold in Hong Kong. See HemoHIM side effects and safety and HemoHIM liver safety.

Stop if you notice unusual symptoms

If you notice anything unusual — such as swelling, changes in urination, unusual tiredness or yellowing of the skin or eyes — stop taking it and contact your doctor.

Bottom line

HemoHIM reduced cisplatin-related kidney damage in animals, and a 13-week rat study found no toxicity at the doses tested. There is no human evidence that it is good for the kidneys. With a kidney condition, dialysis or chemotherapy, ask your doctor first. Learn more in what is HemoHIM. This site is run by an independent Atomy distributor.

❓ Is HemoHIM good for kidneys?

There is no human evidence that it is. In animal studies, HemoHIM was associated with less kidney damage caused by the chemotherapy drug cisplatin, but this has not been tested in people.

❓ Can HemoHIM help with kidney disease?

It has not been studied in people with kidney disease and is not a treatment for it. If you have kidney disease or are on dialysis, ask your nephrologist before taking any supplement.

❓ Is HemoHIM safe for people with kidney problems?

This is not known. An 8-week trial in healthy adults found no clinically significant adverse events, but it did not include people with kidney disease. Ask your doctor first, and mention its sugar content and any diet limits such as potassium.

❓ Can I take HemoHIM during chemotherapy to protect my kidneys?

Only if your oncologist agrees. The kidney findings come from animal studies, and some supplements can affect cancer treatment. Never add a supplement to chemotherapy without medical advice.
