HemoHIM Clinical Studies: What the Published Research Actually Shows

Written by Poblo Peraltas, Independent Atomy distributor

What HemoHIM clinical studies really found: four small human trials on immune markers, fatigue and safety, the lab and animal research behind it, and the limits of the evidence.

Short answer: HemoHIM has been tested in a few small human trials. Two early studies by its developer, KAERI, reported changes in immune markers such as NK-cell activity; a 2022 placebo-controlled trial found lower fatigue scores; and a 2025 safety trial found no clinically significant adverse events. Everything else — radiation, cancer, liver, kidney, allergy and inflammation — is laboratory and animal research only.

HemoHIM is an extract of Angelica gigas, Cnidium officinale and peony root (Paeonia lactiflora), developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) with the manufacturer Kolmar BNH and sold by Atomy — see our HemoHIM ingredients guide. This site is run by an independent Atomy distributor; we describe the research as it is, not as it is often marketed.

Where the research began: KAERI

KAERI researchers studied traditional Korean herbal combinations for their ability to support immune and blood-cell recovery after radiation. In irradiated animals, the three-herb extract was reported to help blood-forming and immune cells recover. These were animal experiments and do not show that HemoHIM protects people against radiation.

The human trials, one by one

KAERI immune studies (2006 and 2007)

  • Who and how many: adult volunteers in South Korea — 38 in 2006 and 88 in 2007 — in studies run by the developer.
  • How long: about two months of daily intake.
  • Measured and found: changes in blood immune markers such as natural killer (NK) cell activity. NK-cell activity is a laboratory marker; a change in it does not by itself mean fewer infections. In the 2007 study, NK-cell activity and some immune signalling molecules increased over two months; in the smaller 2006 study, the increase was significant only in one subgroup.

Fatigue trial (Seo et al., 2022)

  • Who and how many: 96 adults with fatigue, randomly assigned to HemoHIM or placebo.
  • How long: 8 weeks.
  • Measured and found: fatigue scores (exercise performance was also examined); fatigue scores were lower with HemoHIM than with placebo.

Safety trial (Seo et al., 2025)

  • Who and how many: 96 healthy adults in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. The trial was supported by the manufacturer, Kolmar BNH, and included only adults aged 30–59.
  • How long: 8 weeks.
  • Measured and found: adverse events and safety measures; no clinically significant adverse events compared with placebo.

In addition, a rat study (Toxicological Research, 2025) found no treatment-related toxicity at up to 2,000 mg/kg per day for 13 weeks, and no genotoxicity in standard tests.

Laboratory and animal research areas

Most HemoHIM research has been done in cells or animals. None of the following has been shown in people:

  • Immune balance: in animal models HemoHIM influenced the Th1/Th2 balance and reduced airway inflammation in an allergy model.
  • Recovery after radiation or immune-suppressing chemicals: faster immune and blood-cell recovery in animals.
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity: in test tubes and cells, antioxidant activity and lower inflammatory signals such as TNF-α and IL-6.

Limitations of the research

  • Small: each human trial had fewer than 100 participants, all in South Korea.
  • Partly developer-run: the early trials were carried out by KAERI itself; independent replication is still needed. The 2025 safety trial was also supported by, and co-authored with, the manufacturer Kolmar BNH.
  • Surrogate markers: the immune studies measured blood markers, not outcomes such as how often people fall ill.
  • Short: about two months, so long-term effects and safety are not well studied. HemoHIM has not been shown to treat, cure or prevent any disease.

In November 2021, Hong Kong and Taiwan told consumers to stop using HemoHIM after methoxsalen, an undeclared prescription drug, was found in samples; four liver-injury cases had been reported in Hong Kong. Whether HemoHIM itself caused them is debated. As of October 2026, HemoHIM is sold again in Atomy’s Singapore mall and, as HemoHIM G (艾多美 煥力飲G), in Atomy’s Taiwan mall; it is still not sold in Hong Kong. See our HemoHIM liver safety analysis and HemoHIM side effects and safety.

Regulatory status

In South Korea, the MFDS registers HemoHIM as a health functional food that “may help improve immune function” and “may help reduce fatigue”, at one sachet twice a day — not as a medicine. In the United States it is a dietary supplement, and the FDA does not approve dietary supplements.

Bottom line

The human evidence is real but limited: four small trials on immune markers, fatigue and short-term safety. Treat HemoHIM as a supplement, not a treatment. Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid it; people on blood thinners or immunosuppressants, or with autoimmune or liver disease, should ask a doctor first. More in HemoHIM and the immune system.

❓ Is HemoHIM scientifically proven?

Not proven in the strict sense. A few small human trials, partly run by the developer, reported changes in immune markers such as NK-cell activity and lower fatigue scores than placebo, and an 8-week safety trial found no clinically significant adverse events. Larger independent studies are still needed.

❓ How many clinical trials has HemoHIM had?

We know of four human studies: two KAERI immune studies (38 and 88 participants, about two months), a 2022 fatigue trial in 96 adults over 8 weeks, and a 2025 safety trial in 96 healthy adults over 8 weeks. Other research is in animals or cells.

❓ Who developed HemoHIM?

HemoHIM was developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) together with the manufacturer Kolmar BNH, and it is sold by Atomy. It is an extract of Angelica gigas, Cnidium officinale and peony root (Paeonia lactiflora).

❓ Does HemoHIM research show it helps with cancer or radiation?

Only in laboratory and animal studies. No human trial has shown that HemoHIM prevents or treats cancer or protects against radiation. Anyone undergoing cancer treatment should talk to their oncologist before taking any supplement.
